Soya nutrition for pre-school children(Anganawadi) pregnant women & lactating mothers

1.  WHY YOUNG CHILDREN NEED MORE PROTEINS

Proteins are life. They are the main solid matter in the muscles; they are also the major constituents of blood, matrix of bones, teeth, skin, nails and hair. Our body which contains about 60% water and 19% fat is held together by only 17% proteins and 4% minerals.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has assessed that the daily protein requirement for young and growing children is 50% to 60% more than for normal adults, for body building and for brain development. New tissues are being laid down during growth which are built up of elements drawn from protein.

Children on low protein diet tend to be smaller and have thin, lanky bodies in teens.

2.   WHY PREGNANT WOMEN & LACTATING MOTHERS NEED MORE PROTEINS

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has assessed that the daily protein requirement for pregnant women and nursing mothers is 30% to 50% more than for normal adults.

Pregnancy and lactation are two stages of life, when an adult women’s protein needs are increased. She has the responsibility of supporting the growth of the foetus internally during the nine months of pregnancy and later externally responsibility by nursing the infant. Since the growth needs at the commencement of life are crucial, good nutrition is a must for the expectant as well as nursing mother. During pregnancy, a number of tissues are formed to protect and sustain the foetus and the mother has to meet her own needs and the needs of the growing foetus. There is an additional need for the growth of other related tissues and to build up fat stores to cushion the foetus, prior to birth and to supply a part of the energy needed for milk formation during lactation.
